Member Testimonial: Marty Reep, Armstrong Wood Plant
Marty Reep has worked at the Armstrong wood plant in Warren, Arkansas, for more than 15 years. As Environment, Health and Safety manager, he’s led the plant’s employees in building a world-class safety culture.

The plant, known locally as the Witt plant, was the first facility in Armstrong’s flooring business to reach one million plant hours without an OSHA recordable injury. The plant’s 265 employees achieved this record in just 18 months, and they have worked 2.1 million hours since their last day’s away case in October 2005. Marty Reep

Armstrong General Manager – Solid Wood Operations, North America, Harry Bogner said, “Under Marty’s leadership, our employees have committed to making injuries unacceptable in the manufacture of our products. During his tenure, Witt has consistently been at the top in safety performance, not only for our solid wood business but for Armstrong as a whole.”

Marty said, “Our employees have made the difference, and I am very proud of our success.  Safety is a mindset and a concerted effort at our plant.  Our employees watch out for each other every day.”

In addition to his role at Armstrong, Marty is a Methodist minister for two churches and alderman for the Warren City Council.  He said, “I want to help and serve people. As a lifelong resident of Warren, the Armstrong plant and its employees mean a lot to me; it’s part of our community.  I want to contribute to the vitality of Armstrong as an employer here and to the health of the place my family and friends call home.”

Marty represents Armstrong as a member of the National Safety Council Arkansas-Louisiana-Texas (NSC Ark-La-Tex) Chapter.  The Witt plant recently held a safety round table event that included Sally Head, director of NSC Ark-La-Tex; attendees from the local hospital; the county judge; director of the local health department; and Armstrong employees  Ken McBride, plant manager; Mike White, Human Resources manager; Hugh Harrod, Lumberyard manager; Jay Fugatt, controller; John Hamaker, Lumber Procurement manager and Marty.  Speakers were Bill Lacy with the Arkansas Insurance Commissioners’ Office and State Representative Gregg Reep.

Marty said, “Our plant has enjoyed a tremendous amount of safety success in the past several years, and we want to share what we’ve learned.  I personally have a passion for safety, and I’m happy to be part of creating safer environments at work and beyond. Our involvement with the National Safety Council gives us a forum, and the tools, to further that goal.  I encourage anyone interested in safety to join the organization.”

Safety Ambassador Booth Exhibit Hits the Road!

Safety Ambassdor Booth Display

The Safety Ambassador Booth Exhibit will hit the roads of the Ark-LA-Tex in 2009 to bring about a grass roots effort to reduce the staggering numbers of unintentional injuries and death.

Motor vehicle crashes, unintentional drug overdoses, falls, both in the workplace and at home and overexertion are the top causes of injury and each of these are presented within the Safety Ambassador program along with printable hand-outs and posters. These unintentional injuries affect your work force dramatically. Free to anyone, the program helps anyone put on an effective presentation to employees, civic organizations, professional groups, students or churches.

By including our member companies, local and regional government and hopefully many community volunteers, we hope to have Safety Ambassadors in every community. We need you to help us network through trade shows, the media, professional and civic groups to put forth our message of prevention using the Safety Ambassador Program.

For more than ninety-six years, the National Safety Council has saved lives by preventing injuries at work, on the roads, in homes and communities through leadership, research, education and advocacy. But more work is needed. We offer this plan and hope you will contribute to get this program into every community we serve, including yours.

Please make a commitment now to support our efforts in 2009 with a donation.

What is the National Safety Council's Safety Ambassador Program?
safety ambassadorIt's an outreach program focusing on motor vehicle safety, falls prevention, unintentional drug overdose, and overexertion. Whether directly, or indirectly, each of us has been touched by these issues. Yet, the injuries and deaths caused in these areas are preventable. Change can happen, but the Council can't do it alone. We need your help.

Our goal for 2009 is to bring the benefits the National Safety Council has to offer to the entire Ark-LA-Tex. I am asking for your help to establish a stronger presence in your community. One of the ways we get out the word about how accidents can be prevented is to hold seven yearly conferences in our areas of member concentration.
